New Google Android to be called KitKat
In a surprise move, Google has named the latest release of its mobile operating system (version 4.4) after the popular chocolate bar produced by Nestle. The Android OS powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets is to be called KitKat after previous releases were named such as ‘donut’, ‘cupcake’ and ‘ice cream sandwich’.
According to John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, it was not a ‘money-changing-hands kind of deal’. Instead, the idea was borne out of the preferred late-night snack of software developers. John Lagerling subsequently made a call to the UK headquarters and within 24 hours, the deal was agreed.
To promote the alliance, Nestle will produce 50 million promotional KitKat bars featuring the Android logo. Whilst most people had expected the 4.4 release to be called ‘Key Lime Pie’, most Google employees would have found out only when a statue of the Android mascot made out of KitKats was unveiled at the firm’s headquarters.
It appears to be a clever association with most people having positive experiences of KitKat bars, and the worldwide exposure would surely do Nestle no harm. However, with this type of association, each partner's reputation affects the other, whether that be positive or negative, so let's hope that Android KitKat will be stable and bug-free.
